The H1N1 virus, also known as Swine Flu, was the top medical story of 2009. In March, the virus caught the attention of health officials in Mexico when cases of a flu-like illness were reported in the state of Veracruz. The transmission of the virus was so rapid that by mid-June the World Health Organization declared the first flu pandemic in more than four decades. VOA's Melinda Smith looks back at the progression of the disease, as well as other major health issues of 2009.
